The Bellefontaine Horse Car #33 was the first artifact obtained by The National Museum of Transportation in 1945.

Originally built in the 1870's operated until 1895. Mules pulled the car between downtown St. Louis and Bellefontaine in north St. Louis county.

Passengers would enter through the rear door, fare was a nickle. There was no heater. In the winter, the company would place straw on the floor to provide added insulation.

The driver was paid 9 1/2 centys an hour. The mules were only allowed to work six hours a day, the drivers had to work much longer!
